Washington DC : The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has revoked more than 300,000 American visas during his second term, the State Department said Tuesday, as the federal government continues to tighten immigration rules.
The latest figures show an acceleration in visa revocations in recent weeks. According to figures released by the State Department on August 10, more than 175,000 visas had been revoked since Trump began his second term in January 2025.
Trump has said his administration’s immigration crackdown and deportation campaign are aimed at strengthening domestic security. Rights advocates, however, have raised concerns that the measures violate due process and freedom of expression and create an environment of insecurity, particularly for minority communities.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott announced the figures on social media platform X, claiming that the Trump administration had revoked visas at the fastest rate and in the largest numbers in history.
The administration has zero tolerance for foreign visa holders who violate the law, engage in fraud or threaten U.S. national security, Pigott said.
Rights advocates have strongly criticized visa revocations targeting foreign demonstrators who opposed Israel’s attacks on Gaza in support of Palestinians, as well as foreign nationals who commented on social media about the killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
Alongside efforts to deport foreign demonstrators, the Trump administration has tightened scrutiny of social media accounts belonging to immigrants and visa applicants.
According to rights advocates, the government has used national security as a pretext to target its critics. They have also accused the administration of targeting entire immigrant communities, including Somali Americans in Minnesota, over isolated cases of fraud.
Trump, who promised during his 2024 election campaign to stop illegal immigration, has also made legal immigration more difficult since taking office by imposing expensive fees on certain employment-based visas.
