KATHMANDU- At least seven people have died and 554 are missing after flooding struck Kyirong in Tibet near the Nepal-China border.
Chinese authorities said a large-scale search and rescue operation was underway in the area to locate those missing.
According to Xinhua news agency, a team from the Sichuan Fire and Rescue Corps intensified search operations in the main disaster-hit area from 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
Rescue teams on the ground said they were using heavy machinery as well as manpower to search for the injured and missing.
The natural disaster in Kyirong, one of the major trading points connecting Nepal and China, has caused significant loss of life.
Officials said rescue operations were continuing in the area and further details of the incident were still awaited.
