KATHMANDU: Several provinces of Nepal could experience heavy rainfall from Friday to Saturday under the influence of Cyclone Arnab, which is developing over the Bay of Bengal, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has warned.
In a special weather bulletin issued on Monday, the department urged people to remain alert, warning that rainfall could affect parts of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces.
According to the bulletin, the cyclone is expected to intensify and could develop into a very severe cyclonic storm.
The weather system is forecast to move northwestwards and make landfall near Yanam, on the coast between Andhra Pradesh and Visakhapatnam in India, on Wednesday.
Friday and Saturday Expected to See More Rain
The department expects weather conditions in Nepal to begin changing from Thursday, with rainfall likely to become more widespread on Friday and Saturday.
From Friday through Saturday, many places in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces could receive moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Heavy rain is possible at some locations.
Parts of Lumbini Province could also experience moderate to heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
In some areas of Karnali and Sudurpashchim provinces, moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is possible, with heavy rain forecast at one or two locations.
Farmers and Mountain Travellers Urged to Take Precautions
The department has urged residents in the hills and Tarai to remain alert in view of the rainfall forecast.
Farmers involved in agricultural activities, including harvesting paddy, have been advised to check weather forecasts and plan their work accordingly.
People travelling to high-hill and Himalayan areas have also been urged to exercise particular caution because of the risk of heavy snowfall, snowstorms and avalanches.
Tourists have been advised to avoid high-altitude areas during the period, while those who have already reached their destinations should remain in safe locations.
The department has also warned of possible cold conditions and landslides in vulnerable areas.
Transport and Daily Activities Could Be Affected
Heavy rainfall could disrupt road and air transport, daily life and other activities, the department said.
It has urged the public and relevant agencies to make necessary preparations and follow regular weather updates for the latest forecasts and safety information.
