Chinese Embassy Rejects Claims It Failed to Warn Nepal Before Flood

KATHMANDU: The Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu has strongly rejected allegations that China failed to provide Nepal with an early warning about the flood, describing the claims as “misleading news.”

In a clarification issued through Facebook, the embassy said claims that a dam on the Chinese side had burst, causing damage in Nepal, and that China had failed to inform Nepal were baseless.

According to information released by the embassy, a major geographical disaster, similar in nature to an earthquake or avalanche, occurred on the Nepal side on the morning of Aug. 26.

The incident triggered a massive landslide carrying mud in the Kerung-Rasuwagadhi border area.

The embassy said the natural disaster caused damage not only on the Nepal side but also on the Chinese side, where many people were also reported missing.

The embassy said that at a difficult time of disaster, the focus should be on mutual assistance and cooperation rather than making false accusations.

“Accusations do not help; only cooperation can save lives,” the embassy said in its message. The embassy stressed that both countries should work together on rescue and relief efforts during the crisis.
