‘Road to Everest’ Brings Nepal’s Himalayan Story to International Audiences in Hong Kong

HONG KONG: The Nepali documentary ‘Road to Everest’ was screened in Hong Kong on Sunday, bringing Nepal’s Himalayan heritage and the story of Mount Everest to an international audience while supporting recovery efforts for families affected by floods and landslides in Rasuwa.

Organised by the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) Hong Kong under the slogan “Experience Everest, Support Rasuwa”, the special screening took place at Sunbeam Whampoa Cinema in Hung Hom.

The audience included Nepali, Indian, Chinese, British, Filipino, Thai and Indonesian viewers, among others.

Viewers praised the documentary’s portrayal of the journey to Mount Everest, its visual presentation and its message about climate change.

NRNA Hong Kong said the special screening was organised in response to audience demand following feedback from an earlier grand premiere. The event also provided an opportunity for people who could not attend the first screening to watch the documentary and experience Nepal’s Himalayan stories.

Screening coordinator and NRNA Hong Kong Vice-President Kabita Gurung said the event aimed to take Nepal’s Himalayan stories to a wider range of communities.

NRNA Hong Kong President Anu Rai said Road to Everest goes beyond the story of climbing the world’s highest mountain. It highlights the contribution, courage, struggles and beliefs of the Sherpa community, as well as the effects of climate change on the Himalayan region.

Rai thanked members of the Nepali community who attended the screening and urged them to support the campaign to help families affected by disasters in Rasuwa.

NRNA Hong Kong General Secretary Indra Pun said efforts by Nepalis to tell their own stories through their own investment and limited resources should be encouraged and supported.

We Will Rise Foundation President Tulsikumar Gurung and the documentary’s central subjects, Raj Gurung and Binod Gurung, also attended the event.

Running for approximately 50 minutes, the documentary follows a journey from sea level to the summit of Mount Everest. It explores the challenges of mountaineering, human courage, the contribution of the Sherpa community, Nepal’s Himalayan heritage and the effects of climate change on mountain regions.

Produced by the We Will Rise Foundation, the documentary is directed by Nirmal Shrestha. Its story was written by journalist Santosh Acharya and Shrestha. Made in both Nepali and English, the film features a Nepali technical and production team.

According to the production team, efforts are continuing to bring Road to Everest to audiences worldwide through international film festivals and special screenings.
