KATHMANDU: Binita Khadka, a candidate for the Nepali Congress Central Working Committee in the party’s 15th general convention, has been arrested on allegations of defrauding people by promising to send them to Israel for employment.
Deputy Inspector General Uma Chaturvedi of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) confirmed Khadka’s arrest.
A CIB team arrested her in Kathmandu on Friday night, according to officials.
Sources said Khadka, who was contesting for a central committee seat under the open women’s category, was seeking votes from convention delegates when she was arrested.
According to sources, Khadka’s name became linked to the investigation through Bharat Chaulagain of Ramechhap, who was previously arrested on allegations of defrauding people by promising to send them to Israel for foreign employment.
Police said Khadka was arrested as part of further investigations into the case.
Earlier, the CIB arrested Balika Shiwakoti, 32, of Dolakha, and Chaulagain, 51, of Ramechhap, in connection with the case.
The two are accused of defrauding people of 250 million rupees by luring them with promises of employment in Israel. Police said further investigations are underway to establish Khadka’s alleged involvement in the case.
Khadka became a central committee member representing the Gen Z age group following the Nepali Congress’s second special general convention, held at the end of Poush 2082 in the Nepali calendar.
At the party’s 15th general convention, she was elected a general convention delegate from Ramechhap with the highest number of votes and subsequently contested for a central committee seat.
