KATHMANDU: Nepali film ‘Kabaddi 5’ was released in Australia and New Zealand on Thursday, with more than 50 shows scheduled, according to distributor Seven Seas International.
Patrick Subedi, the company’s distributor, said more than 4,000 people were expected to watch the film across the two countries on its opening day.
Available occupancy figures also indicate strong audience turnout, raising expectations of further box office earnings over the coming weekend.
Before its release in Australia, the film had already sold 1,500 advance tickets, generating 3.5 million Nepali rupees in revenue.
The film has previously been released in Nepal, the United States, the Middle East, and several countries in East Asia and Europe. Its Australia release marks another expansion into international markets.
According to Subedi, the film’s earnings had already exceeded Rs 100 million by Wednesday when Nepal’s five-day collection of Rs 70 million was combined with four days of earnings from the United States and the Middle East, along with advance ticket sales in Australia.
With the fifth-day collections from the United States and the Middle East and the opening-day earnings from Australia and New Zealand added, the film’s global box office collection is expected to exceed Rs 120 million by Thursday.
With the weekend still ahead, the film’s total collection could rise further.
Directed by Rambabu Gurung, Kabaddi 5 stars Dayahang Rai, Srijana Gurung and others. The film has also been performing strongly at the box office in Nepal.
The film was produced by Baasuri Films, including Maniram Pokharel.
