KATHMANDU- A scientific journey that began with studying chemistry in Nepal has now reached the international stage for Dr. Shiba P. Adhikari, a Nepali-born scientist and Materials Scientist at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory.
Electro-Lith, a battery technology in which Dr Adhikari has played an important research role, has been selected as a winner of the prestigious 2026 R&D 100 Award-one of the world’s best-known honors for technological innovation, the Argonne National Laboratory stated in a press release.
Often described as the ‘Oscars of Innovation,’the R&D 100 Awards recognize 100 of the most significant new technologies developed each year around the world. The award has historically recognized technologies that have gone on to make a major impact on science, medicine, industry, and everyday life.
For Dr. Adhikari, the recognition represents not only an important professional achievement but also a remarkable journey from Nepal to one of the world’s leading scientific research institutions.
From Nepal to an International Scientific Career
Dr. Adhikari’s scientific journey began in Nepal, where he developed an early interest in chemistry and science.
After completing his studies in Nepal, he moved abroad to pursue advanced education. He earned a Master’s degree in Materials Chemistry from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom and later completed a Ph.D. in Chemistry at Wake Forest University in the United States.
Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Adhikari continued his research career at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, one of the United States’ major national laboratories, where he worked as a postdoctoral researcher.
His experience in materials chemistry, electrochemistry, and energy-related research eventually led him to Argonne National Laboratory, where he joined the Applied Materials Division in 2022.
Today, he works as a Materials Scientist at Argonne, conducting research in advanced materials, batteries, electrochemical technologies, and advanced manufacturing.
What is Electro-Lith?
The demand for lithium-ion batteries is increasing rapidly around the world. Electric vehicles, smartphones, laptops, renewable-energy storage systems, and many other technologies depend on rechargeable batteries.
As battery demand continues to grow, scientists and engineers are looking for ways to make battery manufacturing faster, more efficient, less expensive, and more sustainable. Electro-Lith is one such technology.
The technology focuses on preparing battery materials before the final battery assembly process. It uses an electrochemical approach to add lithium to battery-active materials and create a protective layer around the active particles.
It is stated that this approach has the potential to simplify battery manufacturing and improve the efficiency of the overall process. By preparing materials earlier in the manufacturing process, the technology could help reduce processing time and energy use while potentially lowering manufacturing costs.
The technology’s innovation and potential industrial impact helped earn Electro-Lith a place among the 100 technologies recognized by the 2026 R&D 100 Awards.
A Significant Milestone in Dr. Adhikari’s Research Career
The R&D 100 Award is an important milestone in Dr. Adhikari’s growing research career.
His work has consistently focused on solving practical problems in energy and materials science. Rather than developing materials only for laboratory demonstrations, he has focused on understanding how advanced materials and chemical processes can eventually be used in real-world technologies.
This approach has been particularly important in his battery research.
Battery manufacturing involves many complex steps, from preparing active materials to forming electrodes and assembling battery cells. Improving even one of these steps can have a significant effect on the performance, cost, and scalability of battery production.
Dr. Adhikari’s research has focused on addressing some of these challenges through new materials and processing approaches. Electro-Lith is one example of this work.
More Than 40 Scientific Publications and Several U.S. Patents
Electro-Lith is only one part of Dr. Adhikari’s broader research portfolio. He has authored more than 40 scientific publications and is an inventor on multiple U.S. patents. His research interests include advanced materials, battery materials, MXenes, two-dimensional materials, electrocatalysis, and energy technologies.
One of his major research areas is MXene, a class of two-dimensional materials that has attracted significant attention because of its electrical, chemical, and mechanical properties.
Dr. Adhikari has been involved in research exploring the use of MXenes in batteries, electrocatalysis, advanced electrical conductors, and other emerging energy technologies.
He is also actively involved in research projects supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, working on technologies that could contribute to future energy storage and electrical infrastructure.
